Take a Virtual Field Trip to
Hendrick Motorsports &
Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Bank  of America initiated its 10-year, $1.5 trillion community development goal in 2009.  Since 2008 Bank of America has partnered with local school districts to share the excitement of STEM through motorsports.

100 students attend speedway events in which NASCAR and engineering professionals interact with students in hands-on, minds-on activities.  These Students at the Speedway events provide the excitement around STEM and show both students and teachers that motorsports is driven by STEM as much as by its stars like Kasey Kahne and Rusty Wallace.

The long-term impact within a community comes from professional development for teachers and curriculum donated to the schools so that all students in a district can benefit from the event, not just the 100 who attend.  Donated curriculum includes the FastTrack RC and Students at the Speedway Virtual Field Trip.

At the Fall 2009 Students at the Speedway event, Bank of America filmed the student experience at Charlotte Motor Speedway and the professional NASCAR experience at Hendrick Motorsports, home of the 24 and 48 cars.  The result is a Virtual Field Trip made of 5 videos that address all major Forces & Motion concepts and 5 videos for the Career- Technology classroom, each with corresponding lessons.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) is developing a full Forces & Motion unit and Ten80 Education has developed supplemental activities to go with each video.

“Teachable moments don’t always come within the confines of the classroom.  It’s our hope that through what students learn about STEM during Bank of America’s Students at the Speedway will encourage these kids and provide a practical application of how science, technology, engineering and math can impact their future.” - Sam Willett, East Central Florida Market President for Bank of America.

"So many of these kids I can never get them to pick up a calculator much less use it.  Today I saw them digging in and excited to do it.  Thank you." - Teacher from Flagler County, FL
